375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 260, taken October 19, 2008, Mono Lake, California.
Flies! To be specific Alkali flies! These little guys are everywhere around the amazing Mono Lake in the Eastern Sierra Nevada range. This lake, on the edge of Yosemite National Park is an amazing site.
Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in a basin that has no outlet to the ocean. Because it lacks an outlet, dissolved salts make the lake very alkaline and saline.

A rattlesnake crosses a log in Yosemite National Park.
While I can’t say I like insects too much, reptiles and snakes on the other hand are quite fun. The rattlesnake in particular seems pretty ok, since you usually have good warning before you are about to step on one. Tree snakes and sea snakes on the other hand … not quite as comforting.

A 14mm landscape from Mono Lake, California. The desolate was once featured on Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here album cover.
The lake, just east of Yosemite National Park is really a bizarre landscape. The salt formations, long term effects of forest fires and the Sierra Nevada’s clean air make for some wild landscapes.

The Eastern Sierra — one of the most gorgeous places on earth. In this part of the world, you can throw a rock and most likely hit nice light on an amazing landscape.
This photo was taken as part of an article written by author Jeremy Evans for the Tahoe Daily Tribune. In the original article here, I published two slideshows two show the variation in color and landscape of the area.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 145, taken April 16, 2009, Mist Trail, Yosemite National Park
Another photo from one of my favorite places on earth, Yosemite National Park. This photo taken on the Mist Trail at the end of the winter shows a mix of ice and light creating a pretty vibrant rainbow.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 139, taken October 20, 2008, Morrison Peak, California.
On the edge of the Sierra Nevada, Morrison Peak rises high out of the landscape, directly above Convict Lake. From a far, the climb to the summit of this peak looks a little intimidating, however, the reality is not nearly as steep or difficult as it looks. Beyond this peak begins the John Muir Wilderness Area which eventually leads to Yosemite National Park.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 132, taken April 15, 2009, Yosemite National Park, California.
One of my favorite places in the world — Yosemite National Park. This park is just jammed pack full of landscape photography opportunities. While living at Lake Tahoe I was fairly close to the historic park for three years. I often found while the landscape of the park is stunning, weather patterns often made for really interesting photography — even when the landscapes weren’t as dramatic as the iconic shots that are a dime a dozen out of Yosemite.

365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 87, taken February 21, 2011, Yosemite National Park, California.
Back in my Tahoe days, Yosemite National Park was just a stone’s throw away. In the forefront of this photo is the epic Half Dome, an enormous granite done climbed by thousands every year.
Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, located in northeastern Mariposa County, California, at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley — possibly Yosemite’s most familiar rock formation. The granite crest rises more than 4,737 ft (1,444 m) above the valley floor.

365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 6, taken October 19, 2008, Mono Lake, California.
Just down the street from yesterday’s hot springs is Mono Lake, a bizarre lake bordering Yosemite National Park. The alkaline lake is filled with salt formations that come from local hot springs creating bizarre landscapes. The lake was once featured on the back cover of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were here album.
The album’s back cover depicts a faceless “Floyd salesman”, in Thorgerson’s words “selling his soul” in the desert (shot in the Yuma Desert in California). The absence of wrists and ankles signifies his presence as an “empty suit”. The inner sleeve shows a veil in a windswept Norfolk grove, and a splash-less diver at Mono Lake—called Monosee on the liner notes—in California (again emphasising the theme of absence). The decision to shroud the cover in black plastic was not popular with the band’s US record company, Columbia Records, who insisted that it be changed (they were over-ruled). EMI were however less concerned; the band were reportedly extremely happy with the end product, and when presented with a pre-production mockup, they accepted it with a spontaneous round of applause.
The lake was also written about by Mark Twain frequently. When I lived in the Sierra Nevada, coming here was always a treat and the location fueled creativity in photography for me.
