Second in the Digital Diary of Italy series, a set of seven young video makers from all over the world joined us in Friuli Venezia Giulia to do some serious storytelling.

I was one of those seven.

Over the seven day assignment in Italy, we were force fed prosciutto and drowned in wine daily as we went from the Italian Alps to the Mediterranean Shores. We went kite surfing, horse back riding, caving and cruised through vineyards on vespas (or in my case, a sidecar). I would wake up on a small island and go to bed in an ancient castle. This photo series documents my digital diary of Friuli Venezia-Giulia. The photos accompany this video.

382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 290, taken November 19, 2011, The Great Wall of China.

Photo 290 shows four people climbing a steep section of the Great Wall of China. What do these people all have in common? They are all Vermonters! Over time my collection of “Vermonters on the Great Wall” has expanded. This section just north of Beijing is steep, falling apart — and wonderful.

You might not recognize this as the city that is home to 20 million people — but believe it or not this is Beijing … well, Beijing Municipality at least. From the Great Wall around Beijing there are some amazing views. And with Beijing’s pollution and the right light during sunset you can actually find some pretty amazing views from the nation’s capital.

In Northern Luzon, Philippines steep mountains and fog are a common site. If you take the trip up from Manilla, this is the sketchy road that will eventually get you to the ancient rice terraces of Banaue.

Lhasa ( /ˈlɑːsə/, Tibetan: ལྷ་ས་, [l̥ásə] or [l̥ɜ́ːsə]; simplified Chinese: 拉萨; traditional Chinese: 拉薩; pinyin: Lāsà; sometimes spelled Lasa) is the administrative capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in the People’s Republic of China and the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau, after Xining. At an altitude of 3,490 metres (11,450 ft), Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world.

In meteorology, an inversion is a deviation from the normal change of an atmospheric property with altitude. It almost always refers to a temperature inversion, i.e. an increase in temperature with height, or to the layer (inversion layer) within which such an increase occurs.

An inversion can lead to pollution such as smog being trapped close to the ground, with possible adverse effects on health. An inversion can also suppress convection by acting as a “cap”. If this cap is broken for any of several reasons, convection of any moisture present can then erupt into violent thunderstorms. Temperature inversion can notoriously result infreezing rain in cold climates.

Kathmandu has to be one of the greatest places on earth to get lost. The old city is an architectural and cultural labyrinth. Surrounded by steep hills, the narrow streets of the city are crammed full of people, temples, sounds, smells, sellers, buyers, trash and your occasional cow or monkey. The place is buzzing with life.
