382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 363, taken February 19, 2011, Bihar, India.
A man reaches for his dinner while a chicken flees for his life. An interesting experiment when traveling, is to always stop in at a grocery store regardless of where you are. Its one of those things that is just a great indication of culture norms of the area.
While I try to go to grocery stores when traveling, often times there are no stores and markets are the closest thing.
Here’s some thoughts from these experiences in India and in China.
382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS is a series of photographs from the archives of jonahkessel.com. Photographs span over eight years and include locations from all around the world. They fall in no particular order, but their own.
For an explanation of why there are 382 days in this photo series instead of the traditional 365 days, see this link. To make bets on how many days will actually pass by the time it takes Jonah to post 365 pictures, see this link.

A women carries a bag from a market in Bhaglapur, India. The market appeared in a blog entry of mine, “Feeding a city II: From macro to micro” last year.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 205 taken October 4, 2010, Cebu City, Philippines.
On the outskirts of Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines a night market thrives. One of my favorite things about visiting this country is the food (both on the streets and in restaurants). Its a unique mix of Asia and European foods that is pretty unique in the world. Wikipedia describes it as:
The style of cooking and the food associated with it have evolved over several centuries from its Austronesian origins to a mixed cuisine with many Hispanic, Chinese, American, and other Asian influences adapted to indigenous ingredients and the local palate.

This photo, taken at a night market in Bihar, India shows the power of Canon’s 5DmII’s high ISO capabilities. Taken at 1600 ISO, with a small bit of noise removal, is pretty clear for a photo with so little light.

Wukesong Camera market. This fine market is where I buy lots of gear in Beijing. The enormous market is filled with stores like this, with most things photographers will ever need. If you need a camera or general gear in Beijing, this is the place to go. For directions on getting there check out photographer Sean Gallagher’s blog on Wukesong Camera Market. Things here will be significantly more expensive than from at BH Photo & Video, however, the price of convenience is one I’m a sucker for.
