382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 360, taken September 1, 2007, Lassen Volcano National Park, California.
Clouds and shadows surround the Northern edge of Lassen Volcano, in Lassen Volcano National Park. There is amazing hiking around here and in general, the park gets considerably less foot traffic than some of its neighboring areas.
382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS is a series of photographs from the archives of jonahkessel.com. Photographs span over eight years and include locations from all around the world. They fall in no particular order, but their own.

382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 354, taken March 5, 2012, Socotra, Yemen.
Landscapes. Cityscapes. Nightscapes. Yeh, done that.
However, not until I landed in Socotra did I get to take some Mars-scapes. Ok, maybe it doesn’t look like as desolate as Mars, but this place does look pretty alien like. Following up a post on speciation and the specifics which make Socotra so unique, this photo comes from a post that looks at some of the overall landscapes of the strange island.

382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 328, taken January 9, 2012, Sichuan, China.
A snowy landscape of the Tibetan Plateau in Sichuan Province, China is partially covered by clouds. The photo has an inverse vignette on it, which I’ve very rarely found an appropriate time to use, but in this case I think it adds to the landscape.

382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 317, taken March 3, 2012, Socotra, Yemen.
Long ago and far away (from you, most likely) a sultan’s daughter fell ill. To help his daughter, the sultan announced that anyone who could find a cure for his daughter’s illness could have any treasure in the sultan’s reach, which was as far as the eye could see and as wild as the mind could imagine. Doctors from all corners of the earth came to help the princess, but none could find a cure. And the girl became gravely ill.

Like yesterday’s photo, this view from Brooklyn into Manhattan at night is a photo stitch comprising of 3 or 4 different photos. While yesterday’s photo was taken with two 14mm shots, leaving a distorted view on the sides of the photo, this shot of the culture capital of the United States is taken with a compacted telephoto view (around 140mm), leaving less distortion on the photo.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 169, taken October 2, 2009, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.
From Peninsula Malaysia, a conversation on Quora about fairytale looking landscapes got me thinking this morning about what makes a landscape look surreal — or like, out of a story book. I believe the answer has just as much to do with light and natural weather elements than the actual physical landscape. In this case above, a misty morning shot with dull light on the undulating highland hills of Malaysia gives this place a storybook feel.
There’s a lot of cool photos and responses on Quora to the question: “Which real places or buildings look as if they could have been taken out of fairytales?”
Check them out — and some of my answers here.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 132, taken April 15, 2009, Yosemite National Park, California.
One of my favorite places in the world — Yosemite National Park. This park is just jammed pack full of landscape photography opportunities. While living at Lake Tahoe I was fairly close to the historic park for three years. I often found while the landscape of the park is stunning, weather patterns often made for really interesting photography — even when the landscapes weren’t as dramatic as the iconic shots that are a dime a dozen out of Yosemite.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 126, taken June 25, 2009, Oran, Algeria.
Down the street from where I was based in Oran, Algeria in 2009 mosques and residents houses are stacked on top of each other. When you think of North Africa, you don’t necessarily picture the tight living conditions you often see in Asia; however, this image shows just how many people can share a small space anywhere in the world. The buildings themselves are very square, geometric and very dirty.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 115, taken July 11, 2009, Big Sur, California.
One of my favorite places in the world — California’s Big Sur State Park is truly an amazing place. The ocean and the forests collide along the amazing Highway 1, just south of San Francisco. The highway is one of the world’s great drives and views like this are not rare.
Big Sur is a sparsely populated region of the central California coast where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. The name “Big Sur” is derived from the original Spanish-language “el sur grande”, meaning “the big south”, or from “el país grande del sur”, “the big country of the south”. The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Big Sur’s Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the contiguous 48 states, ascending nearly a mile (5,155 feet/1571 m) above sea level, only three miles (4.8 km) from the ocean.
