375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 207 taken March 11, 2011, Luzon, Philippines.
In Northern Luzon, Philippines steep mountains and fog are a common site. If you take the trip up from Manilla, this is the sketchy road that will eventually get you to the ancient rice terraces of Banaue.

The sun reaches the horizon in Northern Luzon, Philippines shedding light on a thick fog and mist settled above the ancient rice terraces of Banaue.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 169, taken October 2, 2009, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.
From Peninsula Malaysia, a conversation on Quora about fairytale looking landscapes got me thinking this morning about what makes a landscape look surreal — or like, out of a story book. I believe the answer has just as much to do with light and natural weather elements than the actual physical landscape. In this case above, a misty morning shot with dull light on the undulating highland hills of Malaysia gives this place a storybook feel.
There’s a lot of cool photos and responses on Quora to the question: “Which real places or buildings look as if they could have been taken out of fairytales?”
Check them out — and some of my answers here.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 132, taken April 15, 2009, Yosemite National Park, California.
One of my favorite places in the world — Yosemite National Park. This park is just jammed pack full of landscape photography opportunities. While living at Lake Tahoe I was fairly close to the historic park for three years. I often found while the landscape of the park is stunning, weather patterns often made for really interesting photography — even when the landscapes weren’t as dramatic as the iconic shots that are a dime a dozen out of Yosemite.

365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 103, taken, July 11, 2011, San Francisco, California, USA.
This is the most recent photo so far in the first 103 photographs of the year. Taken on a road trip around the West Coast this last July, this just another foggy day in San Francisco.

365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 82, taken January 15, 2008, Banaue, Carson Valley, Nevada.
An inversion layer in the Sierra Nevada over the Carson Valley.
In meteorology, an inversion is a deviation from the normal change of an atmospheric property with altitude. It almost always refers to a temperature inversion, i.e. an increase in temperature with height, or to the layer (inversion layer) within which such an increase occurs.
An inversion can lead to pollution such as smog being trapped close to the ground, with possible adverse effects on health. An inversion can also suppress convection by acting as a “cap”. If this cap is broken for any of several reasons, convection of any moisture present can then erupt into violent thunderstorms. Temperature inversion can notoriously result infreezing rain in cold climates.

365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 58, taken August 27, 2010, The Friendship Highway, Tibet.
While I have lots of favorite roads in the United States, the coolest road I’ve been on has to be the Friendship Highway, bordering Tibet and Nepal. It is the world’s highest pass and at the point where this photograph is taken, the road just drops thousands of feet quickly. The highway is barely visible through the mist and fog, but you can get an idea of how exciting, and how dangerous this road is.

365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 56, taken August 28, 2010, Kathmandu, Nepal.
“Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travelers don’t know where they’re going.” – Paul Theroux
Kathmandu has to be one of the greatest places on earth to get lost. The old city is an architectural and cultural labyrinth. Surrounded by steep hills, the narrow streets of the city are crammed full of people, temples, sounds, smells, sellers, buyers, trash and your occasional cow or monkey. The place is buzzing with life.

A frequent environmental phenomenon of the Sierra Nevada, this is called an “inversion layer” where atmospheric conditions push fog down and hot air keeps the moisture down.
This is the pass over the mountains from Lake Tahoe into the Carson Valley.
