This colorful chap is hanging out on the banks of the Ganges. The area is full with more colorful outfits, brides and people than anywhere I’ve ever been. It has to be one of the best places for people watching in the world.

382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 348, taken February 25, 2011, Varanasi, India.
A couple months back I wrote a post entitled “Kathmandu: The greatest place on earth to get lost.” While I still believe this hyperbole to be true, I do believe I have found a good match — Varanasi, India.
On the shores of the great Ganges river is the dichotomous land of funerals and tourism. Hindi people come to the banks of Varanasi to burn their dead before setting them to drift down the river.

Many things are happening in the Ganges river. Be it a bath, water source, sewage dump or funeral home — one thing for sure is, its crowded around the ancient banks of Varanasi.
Here, cows share the water with Indian tourists.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 194 taken February 25, 2011, Varanasi, India.
While looking back from the thousands of pictures I took in India, I began to notice some patterns in unrelated images. This pattern came in the form of the row or a line. People, structures, shadows – even animals making geometric shapes across my frames. I find this happens frequently with travel images and while most of it is coincidence, when you put the images together you can make some fun sequences. However, some of the images actually reveal some behaviors in culture that actually show something about a culture and place — even on a wide scale.
In this photo, school children in numbers form a line in Varanasi, India.

375 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 170, taken February 25, 2011, Varanasi, India.
In the small alleys of Varanasi, a vendor sells small items in a small shop. These alleys make Beijing’s hutongs look like highways.
Add a much larger and congested population, more tourists and a ton of cows and these alleys form a unique environment.
These shops were so small, and so cluttered, I couldn’t really figure out how anyone got into the shop without knocking everything over every single morning (and every time you needed to go to the bathroom). I’ll just let that mystery be for now.
