382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 353, taken August 30,2010, Royal Chitwan National Park.
This is a close as I’ve ever been to a wild rhino. The animals are just enormous — and ill tempered. Even more concerning is that when threatened they charge.
This is Royal Chitwan National Park, on the Southern border of Nepal and India.
Living in this environment, is over 700 species of wildlife, including 43 species of mammals. Both the King Cobra and the Indian Rock Python call Chitwan home; however, the real kind of this jungle is the Bengal Tiger. And although you probobly don’t want to be stairing at a wild tiger in the eye, he isn’t really the most dangerous thing living in this park. What you are really worried about is being trampled by a rhinoceroses.

Kathmandu has to be one of the greatest places on earth to get lost. The old city is an architectural and cultural labyrinth. Surrounded by steep hills, the narrow streets of the city are crammed full of people, temples, sounds, smells, sellers, buyers, trash and your occasional cow or monkey. The place is buzzing with life.
For the nomadically curious, this makes Kathmandu a gold mine.

Kathmandu: Full of mystery, culture, history — and trash.
While in the last post I detailed some of the highlights of Nepal’s epicenter, this post focuses on the not-so-nice side of the city. And there is plenty of it. In fact, it is really pretty gross. Trash liters the streets in large piles almost everywhere you go. Worse than that, the place the trash is usually piled is on or next to are ancient temples. Visually and aromatically — this is pretty gross and is certainly one of the dirtier places I’ve ever seen. For those that have traveled in India, I’m sure there are similar sites. I’ve seen trashed beaches in Southeast Asia and witnessed how the North African population deals with their trash (they don’t) — but this was a big step in the wrong direction from those experiences.

382 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 336, taken August 27, 2010, Tibet/Nepal Border, Himalaya.
Welcome to the “other side” of the Friendship Highway. The amazing overpass which goes from Tibet into Nepal. After passing Chinese border control, entering Nepal on foot is about as easy as crossing the street in your home town. After the “no-man’s land bridge” you end up on a small street on the side of a cliff. Mist, fog and precipitation make the entire town feel somewhat like Rivendale, but with a much smaller GDP and more trash (and no Liv Taylor). However, pending on what time of the year you end up here, you will likely see this. A massive traffic jam on the edge of the Himalaya. Landslides and mudslides are so common here, people almost expect it. And if you are in a rush — your screwed. The road itself is barely big enough for a truck, let alone two way traffic.

From China to Nepal, temples can look pretty different. This temple in the heart of Kathmandu is covered with monkeys and shrines. Kathmandu has to be one of the greatest places on earth to get lost. In the of Kathmandu you can see an enormous variety of people. This man, looking a bit raged has a bit of a Roman Toga look. As far as street photography goes, Kathmandu has been one of my favorite cities to hang out in.

Oh — how far backpack technology has come. While this seems to work, it doesn’t look so comfortable. And thinking about walking through the very hectic and crowded streets of Kathmandu with this rig seems even more daunting. But for this person, carrying stuff around like this is just as normal as me grabbing my backpack.

In the ancient city of Kathmandu a boy pees outside a holly temple.
While I find the city of Kathmandu truly fascinating, it is also truly gross. The trash problem is only exacerbated but people using the ancient alleys as bathrooms.

People often ask me how I carry gear around. Well, the answer isn’t simple. But for traveling and shooting on the road I use F-Stop Gear’s Satori bags. Over time, I’ve become friends with the boys over at F-Stop and once in awhile when I see one of their bags in an odd juxtoposition, I’ll take a picture.
Why do I like these bags so much? Find out here.
In this photo, the guy holding his gear with his head just looked so much less comfortable than friend Annie Geratowski wearing an F-Stop bag I thought it was funny.

365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 58, taken August 27, 2010, The Friendship Highway, Tibet.
While I have lots of favorite roads in the United States, the coolest road I’ve been on has to be the Friendship Highway, bordering Tibet and Nepal. It is the world’s highest pass and at the point where this photograph is taken, the road just drops thousands of feet quickly. The highway is barely visible through the mist and fog, but you can get an idea of how exciting, and how dangerous this road is.

Sitting above Kathmandu is a temple filled with smoke, prayer and monkeys. This monkey temple is a fantastic place to visit, although the monkeys are not the nicest ones I’ve seen. Perhaps not quite as aggressive as those I’ve seen touristy areas in Southeast Asia; however, still unfriendly enough you don’t want to get too close.

Kathmandu is one of my favorite places I’ve ever been. The city is like a maze of culture and architecture. To make it even better, there are extremely colorful faces everywhere. Although this guy smiled when I took this photo, he thought this meant we had an agreement where I should pay him and he proceeded to follow me around for a good while asking for money.
This is a very difficult situation for photographers working in the difficult world. More on this ethical debate here.
