365 DAYS - 365 PHOTOS - Photo 5, taken October 18, 2008, Convict Lake, California.
Clouds are reflected on the surface of a hot spring near Convict Lake, Calif., during sunset, Oct. 18, 2008. The minerals in the high Sierra hot spring combined with the setting sun, give the near boiling waters a vibrant glow.
This is one of those simply amazing places. Yosemite National Park is just over the mountains on the right side of the photo and Nevada’s sprawling deserts over the mountains on left. There are lots of hot springs around here - however, these have mud baths that are hidden and free for public use - if you have four wheel drive and the abilityu to find them. Someone actually even installed pipes form the springs to the baths so you can filter water in and out and control temperature. All the baths also have brushes so you can scrub them out and clean them before use.
The Eastern Sierra in general is just one of the best places to camp. But if you can find these guys you can have a fire and a hot bath, camping between enormous snow capped mountains with amazing star clarity. Just a really special place.
